The Oregon Trail

Officially, the Oregon Trail begins in Independence Missouri and ends in Oregon City, Oregon. The trail being 2000 miles long, following a string of rivers and natural landmarks. In later years, after thousands had crossed the trail, there were well worn paths to follow, so getting lost without a guide wasnt as likely.

The Trail was in regular use from 1843 till the 1870's, with a good 80,000 emigrants making their way to Oregon.

The trip in its entirety would have lasted a good 4 months. Those finishing up in 5 months, were thought to have made good time. Those who took longer, risked being trapped in the mountains for the winter, which certainly had terrible risks. The Donner-Reed Party is what usually comes to mind. *shudder*

People who made the trip, usually walked most of the way. Oxen could (and did) die of exhaustion, and they needed those animals to get them to their new home.

monotony, and boredom were broken only by crossing a dangerous river, or maybe a broken wagon wheel.

It is estimated that 1 in 10 people died on their way to Oregon. Those not so lucky, were shot accidently, crushed under wagon wheels, hurt rounding up livestock, and succumbed to disease, among other things. Being attacked by indians was usually the last thing they had to worry about!
